What is an FFL?

An FFL, or Federal Firearms License, is a license issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that allows individuals or businesses to legally engage in certain firearm-related activities under federal law.

Types of Activities Requiring an FFL:

  • Selling firearms as a dealer or gun store

  • Manufacturing firearms or ammunition

  • Importing firearms or ammunition

  • Gunsmithing or modifying firearms for others

  • Dealing in NFA items (with additional licensing)

Main Types of FFLs:

To Get an FFL:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Be legally allowed to own firearms

  • Have a business location (for dealer or manufacturer licenses)

  • Pass a background check

  • Undergo an ATF interview and approval process

  • Pay the application fee (varies by license type)

Why It Matters:

An FFL is required to legally conduct business involving firearms, even if you’re just selling guns online or as a side business. It also allows legal transfers of firearms, including through background checks via the NICS system.
